Very often, women of color can take on many different leadership roles as they hone their skills and pay forward the opportunities and connections that have been meaningful to them, to "lift as they climb."

To this end, leadership, mentorship and sponsorship play important roles in the career trajectory of a woman of color in the fundraising and philanthropy sectors. And then there is partnership. How do we show up for each other as fellow leaders in the field?

Hear from the powerful voices of accomplished women of color leaders, as they discuss their paths to leadership and the role that mentorship, sponsorship and partnership has played in their careers.

  • Moderator: Thais Carter
Panelists: Dilnaz Wairich, Kim Richardson, Aimée Laramore

Religion can often draw attention to our differences. However, when it comes to matters of generosity, we can actually find similarities which can be a tie that brings us to more impactful dialogue.

Scripture tells us that where our treasures lay, so does the focus of our hearts. This is a common concept in life, but resonates even moreso when related to one's faith.

What does this mean for philanthropy and for the role women play in philanthropy in the often patriarchal environments of religion? How do we bring our whole selves and the pillars of our faith to how we give and encourage others to give? Join us for a poignant and powerful discussion on faith and philanthropy, new at the WOC Symposium.

  • Moderator: Bely Luu
Panelists: Christal Cherry, Jacqueline M. Ebanks, M.S.

A nonprofit’s board is its most effective fundraising vehicle and its greatest strength. However, the majority of boards do not reflect the national landscape; they reveal a palpable absence of women of color, people with disabilities, and younger professionals.

This informative session will illustrate how a lack of board diversity and inclusivity can have a negative effect on staff recruitment, diversity initiatives, and ultimately, fundraising.

Learn how you can use your influence to create more equitable board leadership. Creating a more balanced board could be your gateway to developing a wider network of expertise and untapped resources.

11:15 AM - 12:20 PM

  • Moderator: Hera Javaid
    Panelists: Leya Petrovani, Anjelica Garcia

How do you define a major gift at your organization? And how can you best go about determining the best way to steward and engage your donors to both maintain and increase their giving?

This session will dive deep into best and creative practices for building successful major gift and mid-level gift strategies, to both grow your donor base and your relationships with your donors.

  • Moderator: Jeannie Sager

The Women’s Philanthropy Institute has conducted dozens of studies examining how and why women and men give. Individually, as well as in the aggregate, the research affirms that gender matters in philanthropy.

With the personal wealth of women rising, and women playing major roles in shaping the future direction of the economic, social, and political arenas, the power and potential of women philanthropists is exponential.

Join Jeannie Sager, Director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute as we seek to better understand where, how, and why women and men give differently and how you can use the research to enhance and inform generosity.

  • Moderator: Carmel Napolitano
    Panelists: Jennifer Lockwood-Shabat, Arshia Sultan

How can you best show up as an effective ally in your life and work without prescribing or tokenizing communities of color and other underrepresented groups? And how can you remind yourself and others that the path to allyship is, as our founder has called it, a "lifestyle change"?

What are some of the ways you can stay encouraged to stay the course, even when life brings distractions and it would simply be easier to accept and fall back on your privilege?

Join us for an honest and impactful discussion on true allyship and how it is work that transforms and work that must continue for many years to come.

Learn practical insights and tips on how to boost your allyship journey or encourage other allies to stay the course in this important work.

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM

Lunch & Learn

  • This session is designed for busy women of color who may lose sleep from time to time, or who may have difficulty sleeping every night. In this session, you will learn about the importance of sleep for your well-being and success.

The content will provide practical tips and actionable strategies to help you achieve the 7-8 hours of sleep your body and mind need every night to function optimally. In other words, we’ll help you learn how to get Good Sleep!

  • Join physiologist and founder of the calm/cool collective, Shakeelah Sutton, for a lunchtime session on using movement and breathing as tools for well-being in our life and work.

More than 50% of relationship managers, ranging from fundraisers to special events staff, have reported experiencing inappropriate behavior from external constituents, according to client trends at The Inclusion Firm. These encounters encompass a range of issues like sexual harassment, discrimination and microaggressions.

Particularly in discussions related to inclusive philanthropy, relationship managers find themselves in the midst of complex triggering conversations and physical interactions. In light of these circumstances, how is your organization proactively equipping and supporting team members to be able to navigate such challenging interactions when they arise?

This session is designed to unpack relationship manager experiences, delve into the dynamics of power and privilege, and underscore the importance of engaging in courageous conversations.

This session will also touch on some key trends and insights on best operational inclusive fundraising practices for your fundraising department.

Panelists: Jen Filla, Alicia Rhymes M.P.W.

A better understanding of certain key platforms can truly enhance your fundraising operation, increase your confidence and provide additional leverage during salary negotiations.

Having proper record-keeping and workflow systems can make or break a development department.
