Senior Director of Institutional Philanthropy
United States of Care
Washington, DC
Anticipated Start Date: August 2026
Description
United States of Care is seeking a Senior Director of Institutional Philanthropy to join our team of passionate, adaptable, accountable, innovative problem-solvers dedicated to making our health care system better for all people. This is a senior leadership role, essential to USofCare’s long-term sustainability.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Director independently leads the organization’s institutional fundraising strategy, building and managing a portfolio of foundation and institutional partnerships that fund our core programs, new initiatives, and organizational growth. The Senior Director builds and sustains relationships with foundations and institutional funders over time, and tracks shifts in philanthropic trends, understanding how those shifts impact organizational positioning. They manage funder relationships with a strategic and practiced sense of when to advance, when to listen, and when to wait.
In any given week, you might craft a proposal in close collaboration with program leaders to align a funder’s priorities with an emerging USofCare initiative; prepare the CEO for a high-stakes cultivation meeting; track shifts in foundation giving trends to analyze their impact on our positioning; or steward a long-standing relationship that anchors a significant portion of the organization’s annual revenue. You’ll manage existing relationships while identifying and cultivating new prospects, while also executing the operational work that makes the development function run: managing grant timelines and reporting requirements, conducting prospect research, overseeing budget coordination with operations staff, and maintaining disciplined stewardship across a large and diverse funder portfolio. The Senior Director is a connector across the organization.
You’ll partner with the Chief Development Officer, program leaders, and the communications team to ensure that what we ask for and how we tell our story reflects both the complexity of the work and the needs of the people we serve. A particular focus of this role is growing unrestricted support, which requires both relationship depth and the ability to translate USofCare’s broad mission into funding asks that resonate with a wide variety of institutional partners. The current grant portfolio is valued at $3–4 million, with a goal to grow it to $6–8 million over the next three to five years.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must have a strong commitment to ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, and have a dedication to operating in a diverse, bipartisan, learning atmosphere that explores multiple policy solutions to achieve our mission. You are willing to respect different points of view, and are committed to applying an equity lens and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in all of your work.
The ideal candidate brings substantial nonprofit fundraising experience with a demonstrated track record in foundation relations, grant writing, and budget proposals, including experience managing a significant portfolio of funder relationships independently. You know how to build a multi-year fundraising strategy and see it through, and you’ve personally cultivated and solicited grants through relationship-driven stewardship rather than transactional outreach.
Successful Candidates will bring:
10+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience with increasing responsibilities and demonstrated growth, with a minimum of 8 years of foundation relations experience;
A track record of managing a diverse foundation grant portfolio and growing it over time, with experience raising multiple millions in foundation funding ($4M+) and stewarding numerous concurrent funder relationships (20+) with minimal oversight;
Deep experience in grant writing, budget proposals, and proposal development, including the ability to collaborate with program staff to translate complex work into compelling, tailored funding requests;
Experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies to identify and convert new foundation prospects, with a particular emphasis on building unrestricted and flexible support; The interpersonal range to build trust with foundation staff and institutional supporters while working collegially with USofCare’s leadership, program teams, and communications colleagues;
Comfort with revenue projections, grant budget oversight, and the operational discipline that keeps a large portfolio running smoothly; Experience with fundraising CRMs (Raisers Edge preferred) and the G Suite; willingness to adopt AI tools to increase workflow efficiency;
Ease in working at a fast-paced, collaborative environment where priorities occasionally shift. An entrepreneurial mindset and high personal integrity; comfort operating at the strategic level while maintaining the tactical hands-on approach necessary to keep development functions running efficiently.
