About the Organization
St. Benedict’s Preparatory School is is more than a school; it’s a community like no other. For over 156 years, they have stood in the heart of Newark, NJ, guided by the Rule of St. Benedict and the monks’ unwavering commitment to stability, service and education. Often called a miracle in education and recognized nationally as a model for revitalizing schools in urban, suburban and rural areas, St. Benedict’s has welcomed generations of students, from the children of German and Irish immigrants in the late 19th century to today’s vibrant, multi-ethnic student body representing all socioeconomic and faith backgrounds.
Their approach is rooted in simple, powerful principles rarely seen in most schools: Students First, Leadership Through Trust, and Ownership Mentality. They put the needs, interests and voices of students at the center of everything they do, they give young people meaningful responsibility and decision-making power, once it’s earned, and Gray Bees take ownership of their education, their community and their future.
