Description
Abortion in America is seeking a Development Officer to join our growing fundraising team. This is an integral position at the heart of our mission to harness the truth of lived experience to reclaim power and build public support for reproductive freedom.
Responsibilities
As Development Officer, you will serve as a key member of the fundraising team for Abortion in America, contributing to creating and executing development programs that fuel our mission. Reporting to the Director of Development (DoD), this position’s primary responsibilities are
1) creating strategic philanthropic communications, including being the lead grant writer of the organization and
2) driving moves management from prospecting to securing funding.
The Development Officer will work closely with the Director of Development and CEO to develop funding priorities, encourage a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, and build the internal infrastructure necessary for long-term fundraising success. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer who can create compelling donor communications, while also bringing the confidence and interpersonal skills to engage donors directly, build strong relationships, and grow into direct solicitation.
Key Responsibilities
Writing and Communications - 40%
Serve as lead writer for grant proposals and reports, ensuring these submissions are packaged in accordance with the requirements of the donor or grant-giving organization
Partner with teams across the organization to develop compelling donor collateral from presentations, designed assets, and annual reports.
Project manage grant proposals, reporting, and philanthropic collateral, including coordinating across internal and external stakeholders to gather information, manage deadlines, and ensure timely and accurate submissions
Help create and articulate the case for support and consistently develop talking points, collect data, and stories that highlight the impact of the organization
Donor Portfolio Management - 40%
Supports moving donors through a giving life cycle, driving a donor outreach strategy and process with the Director of Development and Executive Leadership
Identify, pursue, and secure new funding, sustainably growing and diversifying our donor pipeline.
Work in partnership with the DoD to set a vision, strategy, and plan for cultivating a portfolio of individual & foundation donors.
Supports a portfolio of donors from identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective funders.
Events & Administration - 20%
Develop and execute an in person and digital event strategy, with special attention to the interests of donors and moments that are relevant to our field
Work in partnership with the DoD to design fundraising strategies around Abortion in America’s annual storyteller convening
Work in partnership with the data manager and DoD on ensuring the donor database (Air Table) is up to date and functional for data needs across fundraising efforts
Work in partnership with our fiscal sponsor to support gift processing by handling incoming donations, tracking revenue, and ensuring prompt donor acknowledgments and tax receipts
Requirements
Required Qualifications
These are the minimum qualifications we need to see demonstrated in your application materials.
Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience as a development professional with a proven track record of portfolio management toward meeting fundraising goals
Excellent grant writing and reporting skills with documented foundation funding success
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to educate and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
Experience and comfort interacting with donors for coordination, education, and recognition, such as at events, donor meetings, and other fundraising or prospecting events
Experience supporting major donor engagement and stewardship strategies in person at events and digitally
Thrives in a remote working environment. Comfort building and maintaining relationships, working productively, and communicating well in a fully distributed team.
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
Ability to work independently with limited administrative support while embodying an all-hands-on-deck approach
Passion for reproductive justice and the organization's mission is essential
Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and emotional intelligence
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrating these qualifications will strengthen your application, but are not required.
Demonstrated history of successfully cultivating and personally soliciting gifts from individuals and/or institutional funders
Proficient in prospect research
Proficiency with donor databases and fundraising CRMs. Experience with Airtable is a plus.

Salary Range and Employee Benefits
This position reports to the Development Director, Abortion In America. This is an exempt position with an annual salary of $115,000-$130,000
Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions.
Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment
