Chief Philanthropy Officer
The Synergos Institute
New York, NY
Anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2023
Description
ZRG Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with Synergos in the search for a Chief Philanthropy Officer.
The Chief Philanthropy Officer will be a dynamic, strategic, and mission-driven leader who will spearhead an integrated approach to philanthropy, resource mobilization, and strategic partnerships. Serving as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Chief Philanthropy Officer will develop and execute innovative strategies that strengthen Synergos’ long-term financial sustainability, global influence, and social impact.
The Chief Philanthropy Officer will lead a diversified portfolio that extends beyond traditional fundraising including strategic partnerships, blended financing opportunities, corporate and cross-sector collaborations, philanthropic innovation, and emerging giving models. The role will identify and cultivate new sources of support from foundations, high-net-worth individuals, family offices, corporations, and other partners aligned with Synergos’ mission.
Building the infrastructure for influence, Synergos is investing in the strategic mapping of issues, networks, and communities —developing a clearer picture of where their work intersects with the most critical leverage points for systems change. Alongside this, they are building a Hub and Knowledge Center, along with dedicated communications, tech, and systems capacity to ensure that their methodology, impact, and vision engage the right partners with clarity and conviction. By building meaningful intersections between communities, such as their Global Philanthropists Circle, Collaborative Communities, and Senior Fellows, Synergos is harnessing the power of their growing global network to create a more just, peaceful, and regenerative world. Synergos is committed to the inclusion of all qualified candidates.

Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader who can build diverse partnerships, translate complex impact into compelling narratives, and position Synergos as a trusted partner for funders, innovators, and changemakers committed to advancing inclusive and lasting social transformation. This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape the future of global philanthropy — connecting visionary families, catalyzing collective action, and supporting a new era of more reflective and regenerative giving.
As the inability to collaborate across economic, social, and political divides continues to have dire consequences for our planet and its inhabitants, Synergos is a global organization pioneering the use of Bridging Leadership, which builds trust and collaboration to solve complex problems. Founded in 1986, they have staff and representatives in Africa, Asia, the Arab World, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
Bridging Leadership is a leadership practice used by both individuals and organizations that is effective for building trust and collaboration among diverse stakeholders to address systemic challenges. Bridging Leadership requires inner work to increase self-awareness, skills for social issue analysis such as systems thinking, and a high capacity for collaboration. For nearly 40 years, Synergos has brought together diverse stakeholders in over 30 countries to shift systems, create lasting change, and demonstrate that collaboration, shared vision, and deeper understanding lead to more effective and sustainable solutions.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) and at least 20 years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy and resource mobilization, preferably within a global nonprofit, public/private partnership, and mission-driven organization, is required for this position.
Synergos will consider candidates with a broad range of backgrounds. If you are excited about this role and feel that you can contribute to Synergos, but your experience does not exactly align with every qualification listed above, we encourage you to apply. All applications must be accompanied by a cover letter and résumé. Cover letters should be responsive to the mission of Synergos and the responsibilities and qualifications specified in the position prospectus.
Salary Range and Employee Benefits
The salary range for this position is $225,000 to $235,000. Synergos offers a comprehensive package of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b)-retirement plan with employer contributions, wellness support, professional development opportunities, and generous paid time off.
How to Apply for this Job
About the Organization
Synergos is a global nonprofit organization solving complex issues around the world by advancing Bridging Leadership, a style of leadership which builds trust and collective action. Our experience over the last 35 years tells us that collaboration releases more and better solutions than working alone. Bridging Leadership represents a paradigm shift in leadership: a movement away from hierarchy, control, and fear toward more inclusive forms of problem-solving; from a world in which power is monopolized to one in which power is shared, enabling more effective interventions and longer-lasting impact. With changes wrought by the pandemic, social justice movements and distrust of authority, we believe now is the time when our model can bring about sustained change.
Together with partners in more than 30 countries, Synergos focuses on transforming how people across sectors and divides come together, develop deeper understanding, create shared vision, and take collective action to solve deeply entrenched societal problems. Our model can be applied to many areas of social change and especially with networks of philanthropists and civil society leaders.
The Global Philanthropists Circle was founded in 2001 by Synergos Founder Peggy Dulany and her late father David Rockefeller Senior as a global network for leading philanthropic individuals and families to collaborate with and learn from their peers. GPC members share Synergos’ commitment to create a more just, equitable, peaceful and regenerative world, as outlined in our Community Agreement. Leading with inner work, we nurture a deep trust among our members and cultivate a brave space to share challenges and shift perspectives as the role of philanthropy continues to transform.
