Kalpana Bhandarkar

Nonprofit Specialists Member

Within health care, Kalpana served in leadership positions at NYC hospitals that included: founding and leading the Social Determinants Office at NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest public hospital system; serving as Chief of Staff to two consecutive CEOs at Maimonides Medical Center, a large tertiary care hospital in Brooklyn; and assisting and securing millions of dollars in funding for NYS hospitals restructuring their clinical services to better meet patient demand.

Within the non-profit sector, Kalpana has long-served on the Boards of organizations focused on a number of social justice priorities. She is currently an active Board member of three non-profit organizations: ERASE Racism, a civil rights organization focused on fair housing and educational equity; Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, a statewide child advocacy organization working to advance policies for children and families in low-resource settings; and She Is the Universe, a global leadership development organization for teen girls in 50+ countries.

She serves as Principal at Spring Bhee Advisory, through which she provides capacity-building and advisory services to non-profit and health care organizations. Kalpana holds a Masters in Public Health and Masters in Business Administration.

Kalpana Bhandarkar has more than 20 years of experience working with and at safety net hospitals and non- profit social service, advocacy and civil rights organizations.  

Garrett Lucien

Executive Director, Coro New York Leadership Center

Garrett Lucien is the Executive Director at Coro New York Leadership Center and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Public Service at NYU Wagner. Garrett joined the Coro team in 2013. Since then he has been the lead Leadership Facilitator for all adult programs. Garrett brings a wealth of experience in facilitating and has over twenty years of experience in the fields of Leadership and Community/Economic Development. His experience includes the design and delivery of leadership programs and fellowships for youth, college students, middle managers, and executives on topics including Adaptive Leadership, Personal Ecology, DEI, Effective Communication, and Conflict Resolution. Garrett is a Board Member of Times Square Alliance and a member of their DEI Committee. 

Before coming to Coro, Garrett worked with South Bronx Overall Economic Development (SoBRO) for eight years, most recently as the Senior Director of Economic Development and Financial Services. While working at SoBRO, he specialized in assisting entrepreneurs to establish new businesses throughout the Bronx.

Garrett holds a B.A. from SUNY New Paltz and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Business in New York. Garrett is a second-generation New Yorker who is passionate about helping people to develop skills to create positive change within themselves and their communities.

Zena Lum

Interim Executive Director, The Record Co

With a track record spanning 30 years, Zena Lum is a proven nonprofit leader with expertise in development strategy and operations, executive search, talent management, mentoring, and coaching.

Most recently, Ms. Lum served on the major gifts staff of Harvard Kennedy School’s development team. She is currently volunteering as an Interim Executive Director and Co-Chair of the Board with The Record Co., a nonprofit spanning two facilities operating more than 100 production, recording, and rehearsal studios. Prior to the Kennedy School, Ms. Lum spent nearly a decade with Lindauer Global, an executive search firm focused on the social impact sector.

As a fundraiser, Ms. Lum has directly raised tens of millions of dollars for leading institutions in Boston such as WGBH, Jumpstart for Young Children, New England Aquarium, and Boston Public Schools. During her time with Lindauer, she partnered with organizations from across the country and across the sector to place development leaders and team members that collectively have raised hundreds of millions more to advance education, the arts, health care, and social and environmental justice.

Ms. Lum is parent to a Boston Public Schools graduate and freshman at UMass Amherst. She and her family reside in the South End neighborhood of Boston. She is an active member of her community, volunteering with United South End Settlements, YW Boston, ARCK, and Artisan’s Asylum. In the spring and summer of 2021, Ms. Lum served on an Exam School Admissions Task Force for the Boston Public Schools School Committee.

Ms. Lum is a member of the professional associations Women in Development and Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy. With WŌC, she is a founding member of the advisory committee and an active mentor in the Mentor Match program.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgetown University and is a member of LeadBoston class of 2011.
